Becoming A Light in the Darkness
Today: Being A Disciple
The Rabbi / Disciple Relationship
1. Rabbi’s chose their disciples
Matthew 4: 19 (ESV)
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
2. Jesus came to teach the Torah
James 1: 22 (NLT)
…don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
Matthew 3: 8 (NLT)
Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.
3. Rabbis used visible examples
Matthew 5: 14 – 16 (NLT)
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
4. Rabbis build community
John 13: 35 (NLT)
Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
Ephesians 3: 9 – 11 (NLT)
I (Paul)was chosen to explain to everyone this mysterious plan that God,
the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning. 10 God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was his eternal plan, which he carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Corinthians 11: 23 - 26
For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people — an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
