The Person of the Holy Spirit - Plus
Can we biblically support our belief about the Holy Spirit?
Pneumatology
Why is this important?
1. We don’t want to believe something that is not biblical.
2. We need to know WHY we believe what we believe AND be prepared to defend it.
John 16: 5 - 7 (NLT)
“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. 6 Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. 7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come.
Comforter (KJV) Helper (NASB)
If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
Helper – He is personally sent to actively assist.
How Jesus Described the Holy Spirit
1. The Spirit of Truth
John 14: 16 & 17 (NASB)
I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.
John 16: 12 & 13 (NASB)
“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

2. Counselor
John 15: 26 (NASB)
“When the Helper comes,

Helper – paraklētos: One sent, given, & received. Brings active help.
A. Advocate – legal counselor
B. Counselor – giving of advice
C. Intercessor – Romans 8: 27
3. Teacher
John 14: 25 & 26 (NASB)
“These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.
Teach – didaskō:
A. We are life-long learners.
B. Validates Scripture.
2 Peter 1: 20 & 21 (NASB)
… know this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture becomes a matter of someone’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Prophecy – prophēteia:
Practical instructions on the interpretation of Scripture, but particularly on the Kingdom of God and the Gospel.
