Fruit of the Flesh III

What are the Fruits of the Flesh?

We have two natures:

1.               Sinful nature

2.               Spirit (Holy Spirit) nature

A continuous, life-long war between our flesh and the Spirit.

Galatians 5: 21 (NLT)

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Mark 7: 14 - 23 (NLT)

Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,”

he said, “and try to understand. 15 It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart. 17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.

                   Jim Oliver

18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked. “Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?   19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer.” (By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)    Judaizers…     Syncretism

20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you. 21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.  23 All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

3.               Idolatry (eidōlatria)

Colossians 3: 5 (NLT)

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality,  impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Isaiah 44: 8 – 10 (NLT)

How foolish are those who manufacture idols. These prized objects are really worthless. The people who worship idols don’t know this, so they are all put to shame. Who but a fool would make his own god— an idol that cannot help him one bit?   11 All who worship idols will be disgraced along with all these craftsmen - mere humans - who claim they can make a god.

1 Thessalonians 1: 8 - 10 (NLT)

And now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere,

even beyond Macedonia and Achaia, for wherever we go we find people telling us about your faith in God. We don’t need to tell them about it,  9 for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and true God. 10 And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God’s Son from heaven—Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.

4.               Witchcraft ( pharmakeia)
