THE OTHER SIDE - The Mission of the Messiah // Sunday, May 28,2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Sunday — May 28, 2023

  1. Capernaum

Mark 4: 35 – 40 (NLT)

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”

36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).

37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. 38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!”

Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.  40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!

Another account when the disciples were on the Sea of Galilee…

Matthew 14: 32 & 33 (NLT)

When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

They had seen Water – Wine…

          Healing Leprosy…   Blindness…

Lameness…

Job 9: 4, 8, & 10 (NLT)

For God is so wise and so mighty. Who has ever challenged him successfully? 8He alone has spread out the heavens and marches on the waves of the sea.

10He does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles.

Who walks on Water?

Psalm 107: 26 - (NLT)

Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.   27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.

28 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
29 He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.

30 What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!  31 Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.   32 Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.

Mark 1: 21 & 22 (NLT)

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority —quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

23 Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”

25 But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet!  Come out of the man,” he ordered.

26 At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.  27 Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”

    Matthew 12: 22 – 29 (NLT)

Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see.

23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed.  A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.  26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive.   27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.  29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger —someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.

Let’s go the other side…

4.               Church @ Kursi

5.               Cliff @ Gergesa

Mark 5: 1 – (NLT)

So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes.  When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained,

even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.  5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.

When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.

With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”

For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”

9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”

And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”  10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. 11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.”  13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. 14 The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. 15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.  16 Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs.  17 And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.  18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.”  20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.

Matthew 4: 12 - 17(NLT)

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee. 13 He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah: “In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live, 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” 17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Jesus not only taught with authority, but, I believe, He validated the authority of scripture.

As a rabbi, He taught His disciples the teachings and the ways of God…

Matthew 11: 28 (NLT)

…Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Exodus 33: 14 (NLT)

The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest — everything will be fine for you.”

9.     Sea of Galilee

The Jews of Capernaum during Jesus’ life were well versed in the scriptures and knew they were chosen by God to be His witnesses…

10. Mount Sinai

Exodus 19: 5 & 6 (NLT)

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’…

Numbers 15: 37 - 41 (NLT)

Then the Lord said to Moses,  38 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel:

Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. 39 When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. 40 The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the Lord your God!”

Leviticus 19: 1 & 2 (NLT)

The Lord also said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Israel vacillated between being too intertwined with the world and be too separated from the world…

2 Corinthians 6: 14 - (NLT)

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols?

For we are the temple of the living God.

As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God,and they will be my people.  17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.  18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

A Well-Watered Garden

1.               Judean Hills

2.               Terraced Farms

Isaiah 5: 1 & 2 (NLT)

Now I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard:
My beloved had a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill.
2 He plowed the land, cleared its stones and planted it with the best vines. In the middle he built a watchtower and carved a winepress in the nearby rocks. Then he waited for a harvest of sweet grapes…

Isaiah 5: 7 (NLT)

The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead he found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.

Isaiah 58:

What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. You humble yourselves by going through the motions of penance, bowing your heads like reeds bending in the wind. You dress in burlap and cover yourselves with ashes. Is this what you call fasting? Do you really think this will please the Lord?

6 “No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help. 9“Remove the heavy yoke of oppression. Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors! 10 Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. 11 The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. 12Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities. Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls and a restorer of homes.

A FINAL TEST - With My Whole Heart // Sunday, April 16, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Sunday — April 16, 2023

A Final Test

Exodus 15: 25 & 26 (NLT)

25It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.   26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians;  for I am the Lord who heals you.”

The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you.  I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.   7 Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”

Exodus 7: 1 & 2 (ESV)

And the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet.  You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land.

Exodus 19: 3 – 5 (NLT)

Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God. The Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel:

‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.  Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to meAnd you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”

Micah 4: 4 & 5 (NLT)

Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has made this promise!   5 Though the nations around us follow their idols, we will follow the Lord our God forever and ever.

4.               Vineyards

Joel 3: 18 (NLT)

In that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine...

Deuteronomy 6: 10 – 13 (NLT)

“The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land he swore to give you when he made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build.  11 The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you have eaten your fill in this land, 12 be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.  13 You must fear the Lord your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.   14 You must not worship any of the gods of neighboring nations,    15 for the Lord your God, who lives among you, is a jealous God. His anger will flare up against you, and he will wipe you from the face of the earth.  16 You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah.

5.               Terraced Farm

Isaiah 5: 1 & 2 (NLT)

Now I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a rich and fertile hill.    2 He plowed the land, cleared its stones, and planted it with the best vines. Isaiah 5: 3 & 4 (NLT)

Now, you people of Jerusalem and Judah, you judge between me and my vineyard.   4 What more could I have done for my vineyard that I have not already done? When I expected sweet grapes, why did my vineyard give me bitter grapes?

Isaiah 5: 7 (NLT)

The nation of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. The people of Judah are his pleasant garden. He expected a crop of justice, but instead he found oppression. He expected to find righteousness, but instead he heard cries of violence.

EASTER- The Fallacy of Self-Sufficiency // April 9, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Sunday — April 9, 2023

The Fallacy of Self-Sufficiency

Genesis 3: (NLT)

    …“Did God really say…

“God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.

Genesis 11

James 4: 13 – 16 (NLT)

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”  14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.  15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

Proverbs 21: 5 (NLT)

Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.

James is concerned about the attitude of Self- sufficiency

Those who give no consideration to:

1.               The Existence of God

2.               God’s Authority

3.               God’s Sovereignty

4.               God’s Will

5.               God’s Word

6.               God’s Glory

1.               We have LIMITED knowledge.

James 4: 14 (NLT)

How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow?

2.               Our lives are BRIEF.

James 4: 14 (NLT)

Your life is like the morning fog — it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.

James 4: 15 (NLT)

What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

Proverbs 16: 9 (NLT)

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

James 4: 16 (NLT)

Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans,

and all such boasting is evil.

 Colossians 1: 15 - 20 (NLT)

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,   16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.   17 He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.   18 Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body. He is the beginning, supreme over all who rise from the dead. So he is first in everything.   19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ,   20 and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.

WHY EASTER // Sunday, April 2, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Why Easter

Genesis 3: 1 – 13 (NLT)

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.  “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”

4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.

Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her,  and he ate it, too At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.

Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

11 “Who told you that you were naked?”  the Lord God asked.

“Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.”

13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?”

“The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

Galatians 2: 15 – 21 (NLT)

Paul to Peter

“You and I are Jews by birth, not ‘sinners’ like the Gentiles. 16 Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.

Churches are filled with people trying to be right with God by following…

17 But suppose we seek to be made right with God through faith in Christ and then we are found guilty because we have abandoned the law. Would that mean Christ has led us into sin? Absolutely not! 18 Rather, I am a sinner if I rebuild the old system of law I already tore down. 19 For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law — I stopped trying to meet all its requirements — so that I might live for God.

Our relationship with God based on OUR merit…   OUR  performance…

20 My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  21 I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

Every Word

Deuteronomy 8: 1 – 5 (NLT)

“Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors. Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the Lord your God disciplines you for your own good.

Jeremiah 2: 2 (NLT)

“Go and shout this message to Jerusalem. This is what the Lord says: “I remember how eager you were to please me as a young bride long ago, how you loved me and followed me even through the barren wilderness.

1 Corinthians 10: 1 – 5 (NLT)

I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground.  In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses. All of them ate the same spiritual food, and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

6.               Kadesh Barnea

7.               Marah

Exodus 15: 22 – 27 (NLT)

Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in this desert for three days without finding any water. 23 When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”).

24 Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded.

25 So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.

26 He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the Lord who heals you.”   27 After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.

Joshua 1: 16 – 18 (NLT)

They answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the Lord your God be with you as He was with Moses.  18 Anyone who rebels against your command and does not obey your words in all that you command him, shall be put to death; only be strong and courageous.”

8.               Rephidim

Exodus 17: 5 – 7 (NLT)

The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you.  I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.

Numbers 20: 1-13 (NLT)

In the first month of the year, the whole community of Israel arrived in the wilderness of Zin and camped at Kadesh. While they were there, Miriam died and was buried.

There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron.

The people blamed Moses and said, “If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers! Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord’s people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock? Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, no figs, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water to drink!”

6 Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernacle, where they fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord said to Moses, “You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water…

You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock.”  So Moses did as he was told. He took the staff from the place where it was kept before the Lord.  10 Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. “Listen, you rebels!” he shouted. “Must we bring you water from this rock?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff,

and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill. 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!”  13 This place was known as the waters of Meribah (which means “arguing”) because there the people of Israel argued with the Lord, and there he demonstrated his holiness among them.

Deuteronomy 4: 10 – 12 (NLT)

There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.  11 The Lord sent him to perform all the miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, and all his servants, and his entire land. 12 With mighty power, Moses performed terrifying acts in the sight of all Israel.

Exodus 3: 1 - 4 (NLT)

One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro,

the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up.

“This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.”

When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!

 “Here I am!” Moses replied.

Exodus 3: 7 – 12 (NLT)

Then the Lord told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is a land flowing with milk and honey—the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live. Look!   The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them.  10 Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.”

11 But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?”

12 God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.”

Ephesians 2: 10 (NLT)

… we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Deuteronomy 18: 15 – 22 (NLT)

Moses continued, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you yourselves requested of the Lord your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said, ‘Don’t let us hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore or see this blazing fire, for we will die.’ 17 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘What they have said is right. 18 I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him.  19 I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.  20 But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name or who speaks in the name of another god must die.’

21 “But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the Lord?’ 22 If the prophet speaks in the Lord’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the Lord did not give that message.  That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.

A Place of Remembrance

Exodus 25: 8 (NLT)

Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them.

How would God’s people and remember Him?

Exodus 6: 6 – 8 (NLT)

“Therefore, say to the people of Israel: ‘I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt. I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the Lord!’”

Exodus 6: 9 (NLT)

So Moses told the people of Israel what the Lord had said, but they refused to listen anymore. They had become too discouraged by the brutality of their slavery.

Exodus 15

11 “Who is like you among the gods, O Lord— glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders? 13 “With your unfailing love you lead the people you have redeemed. In your might, you guide them to your sacred home. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain— the place, O Lord, reserved for your own dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established. 18 The Lord will reign forever and ever!”

What impact did the Hebrews newly acquired knowledge of God have on their hearts?

What picture of hope and their future relationship with God begin to emerge?

Exodus 19: 3 – 8 (NLT)

Then Moses climbed the mountain to appear before God.

The Lord called to him from the mountain and said,

“Give these instructions to the family of Jacob; announce it to the descendants of Israel:  ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians.

You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant,

    you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth;

for all the earth belongs to me.  And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”

So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the Lord had commanded him.

And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.”  So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.

Do you think the Hebrews fully understood the kind of relationship God desired to have with them?

Exodus 19: 16 – 19 (NLT)

On the morning of the third day, thunder roared and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long,  loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled17 Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply.

How do you think you would have felt standing their witnessing this event?

Do you think this experience would influence the Hebrews faith and commitment to “do everything the Lord has commanded.”?

How long do you think this experience would impact the Hebrews?

Exodus 32: 1 (NLT)

When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron.

“Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.”
