Doing Life with The Spirit;

What the Holy Spirit Does for Us

The Holy Spirit…

1.               Is a seal

2.               The first installment of the believer’s inheritance.

3.               The Spirit of Wisdom & Revelation.

4.               Helps the believe draw near to God.

5.               Builds the body of believers into a holy temple.

6.               Strengthens the believer with power in the inner being.

7.               Motivates unity in the body of Christ.

Ephesians 4: 1 (NLT)

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God.

a.               Jesus calls us to walk in unity.

John 13: 34 & 35 (NLT)

I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.  35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

b. How can we succeed at living in unity?

1)              Develop the right attitude.

Ephesians 4: 2 (NLT)

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.

2)              Detemine to work at unity.

Ephesians 4: 3 (NLT)

3 Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.

REMEMBER:  It’s the work of the Spirit

3)              Delight in the purpose of unity

Ephesians 4: 4 – 6 (NLT)

4 For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. 5There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism,  6 one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

4)              Discover the value of the diversity of gifts and personalities.

Ephesians 4: 7, 11 – 13 (NLT)

7 However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ.  11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles,

the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work   and build up the church, the body of Christ.  13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

2.               The Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee.

Ephesians 1: 12 - 14 (NLT)

     God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God.   13 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. 14 The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. Doing Life with The Spirit;

The Person of the Holy Spirit –

What He Does for Us

John 14: 16 (NASB)

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever.

Helper – He is personally sent to actively assist.

The Holy Spirit will helps us mature

Ephesians 4: 21 – 23 (NLT)

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Romans 12: 2 (NLT)

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

How did Jesus describe the Holy Spirit?

John 14: 17 (NASB)

The Helper is the Spirit of truth,

John 16: 12 & 13 (NASB)

    He will guide you into all the truth;

How does the  Holy Spirit guide us?

  1. Through the Bible

Hebrews 4: 12 & 13 (NLT)

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow.  It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

  1. Through Christian fellowship

1 Thessalonians 5: 9 – 11 (NLT)

For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ,  not to pour out his anger on us. 10 Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. 11 So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Hebrews 10: 23 – 25 (NLT)

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together,   as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Proverbs 27: 17 (NASB)

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

John 14: 25 & 26 (NASB)

He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.

How?

  1. The Bible

2 Timothy 3: 16 & 17 (NLT)

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

  1. Through the Church

Ephesians 4: 11 – 16 (NLT)

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.  12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

John 16: 8 (NASB)

…And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment:

  1. Holy Spirit convinces the world of sin.

  1. The Holy Spirit convicts YOU of sin.

Romans 8: 1 & 2 (NLT)

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

Hebrews 12: 5 & 6 (NLT)

“My child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. 6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

Doing Life with The Spirit

The Person of the Holy Spirit - Plus

Can we biblically support our belief about the Holy Spirit?

Pneumatology

Why is this important?

1.               We don’t want to believe something that is not biblical.

2.               We need to know WHY we believe what we believe AND be prepared to defend it.

John 16: 5 - 7 (NLT)

“But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going.  Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come.

Comforter (KJV)     Helper (NASB)

If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

Helper – He is personally sent to actively assist.

How Jesus Described the Holy Spirit

1.               The Spirit of Truth

John 14: 16 & 17 (NASB)

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, so that He may be with you forever; 17 the Helper is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

John 16: 12 & 13 (NASB)

“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

John 15: 26 (NASB)

     “When the Helper comes,

Counselor (HCSB)  Comforter (KJV)

whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me,

Helper – paraklētos: One sent, given, & received.  Brings active help.

A.              Advocate – legal counselor

B.              Counselor – giving of advice

C.              Intercessor – Romans 8: 27

3.               Teacher

John 14: 25 & 26 (NASB)

“These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you.  26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you.

Teach – didaskō:

A.              We are life-long learners.

B.              Validates Scripture.

2 Peter 1: 20 & 21 (NASB)

Prophecy – prophēteia:

Practical instructions on the interpretation of Scripture, but particularly on the Kingdom of God and the Gospel.

4.               Convicter

John 16: 8 (NASB)

ONE Sacred Text:  The Bible

3 Lessons in the Old Testament

1)              God’s Character

2)              The character He expects from us.

3)              There’s something wrong with us.

Exodus 13: 8 – 10 (NLT)

You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.”

THE TRINITY pt 2- Doing Life With the Spirit // Sunday, July 23, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

Sunday, July 23, 2023

Doing Life with The Spirit

The Trinity II

1.               Western Christianity

God Eternally and Necessarily Exists as the Trinity:

John 1: 1 – 3 (NLT)

Father & Son

In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.

Genesis 1: 2 (NLT)

Holy Spirit

The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

If all three members of the Trinity are Equally & Fully Divine,

then all three existed Eternally,

and God has eternally existed as a Trinity.

John 17: 5 (NLT)

Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

God can not be other than He is,

For He is unchanging…

Malachi 3: 6 (NLT)

I am the Lord, and I do not change…

3 Essential Summary Statements:

1.               God is three persons.

2.               Each person is fully God.

3.               There is only one God.

Deuteronomy 6: 4 & 5 (NASB)

Exodus 20: 3

The Shema

“Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is oneAnd you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Exodus 15: 11 (NLT)

Moses sings…

“Who is like you among the gods, O Lord— glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders?

God is Unique…   Water Spirits…

1 Kings 8: 60 (NLT)

Then people all over the earth will know that the Lord alone is God and there is no other.

When God speaks – He alone is speaking – He is NOT speaking as one God among three who are to be worshipped.

Isaiah 45: 5 – 6 (NLT)

I am the Lord; there is no other God. I have equipped you for battle, though you don’t even know me,   6 so all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am the Lord, and there is no other.

He calls everyone on earth to turn to Him:

Isaiah 45: 21 & 22 (NLT)

YHWH Challenging Israel over Idols…

For there is no other God but me, a righteous God and Savior. There is none but me. 22 Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other.

Why is the doctrine of the Trinity important?

Is it really essential to hold to the full deity of the Son and Holy Spirit?

Each person in the Trinity has a unique role / function.

Creation:

Genesis 1 & 2

God spoke the creative words to bring the universe into existence.

Colossians 1: 16 (NLT)

Jesus carried out the Father’s creative decrees…

16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see —such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.

Genesis 1: 2 (NLT)

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Apparently sustaining and manifesting God’s immediate presence in His creation.

Psalm 33: 6 (NLT)

The Lord merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.

Redemption:

God planned redemption and sent His Son into the world…

John 3: 16 & 17 (ESV)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Also:

Galatians 4: 4 & Ephesians 1: 9 & 10

Jesus obeyed the Father and accomplished redemption…

John 6: 38 (NLT)

For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.

Neither the Father nor the Holy Spirit died for our sins…

The Holy Spirit is the One who gives us regeneration or new spiritual life…

John 3: 5 – 7 (NLT)

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.   6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’

After Jesus ascended, He said we would receive the Holy Spirit…

John 14: 26 (NLT)

Holy Spirit sent by the Father…

Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.  26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit — he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 16: 7 (NLT)

Jesus will send the Holy Spirit…

it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.

John 15: 26 (NLT)

“But I will send you the Advocate- the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

The Holy Spirit reminds us of Christ’s teachings and continues the work of Redemption…

The Holy Spirit also sanctifies us…

Romans 8: 13 (NLT)

For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

The Holy Spirit empowers us for service…

Acts 1: 8 (NLT)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere — in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In general, the work of the Holy spirit sees t be to bring to completion the work that ha been planned by the Father and begun by the Son.

Life With the Spirit

Genesis 1: 26 & 27 (NLT)

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Father

Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands.

Colossians 1: 15 & 16 (NLT)

Son

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation   16 for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see —such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.

Hebrews 9: 14 (NLT)

The Atonement

Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Hebrews 9: 14 (NLT)

Holy Spirit

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.

The Resurrection of Christ

Acts 2: 24 (NLT)

1 Peter 3: 18 (NLT)

The Inspiration of Scripture

2 Timothy 3: 16 (NLT)

Father

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

1 Peter 1: 10 & 11 (NLT)

Son

This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. 11 They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.

2 Peter 1: 21 (NLT)

Imitators of God

Ephesians 5: 1 – (NLT)

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you.

Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes — these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don’t participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!   9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.    10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.  12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

PENTECOST The Mission of the Messiah // Sunday, June 25, 2023 // Jeff Hines, Lead Pastor

The Mission of the Messiah

Pentecost

Acts 13: 29 – 31 (NLT)

“When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead! 31 And over a period of many days he appeared to those who had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.

1 Corinthians 15: 3 – 7 (NLT)

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.  4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day,

just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.

1.               Solomon’s Temple

Luke 24: 50 – 53 (NLT)

Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven. 52 So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy. 53 And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.

2.               Mount Sinai Experience

Exodus 19: 5 & 6 (NLT)

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’…

3.               Tabernacle Replica

Exodus 40: 34 – 38 (NLT)

Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. 35 Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. 36 Now whenever the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out on their journey, following it. 37 But if the cloud did not rise, they remained where they were until it lifted. 38 The cloud of the Lord hovered over the Tabernacle during the day, and at night fire glo wed inside the cloud so the whole family of Israel could see it. This continued throughout all their journeys.

4.               Ark of the Covenant

2 Chronicles 7: 1 - 3 (NLT)

When Solomon finished praying, fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the burnt offerings and sacrifices, and the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple. The priests could not enter the Temple of the Lord because the glorious presence of the Lord filled it. When all the people of Israel saw the fire coming down and the glorious presence of the Lord filling the Temple, they fell face down on the ground and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying, “He is good! His faithful love endures forever!”

Genesis 18: 3 - 8 (NLT)

“My lord,” he said, “if it pleases you, stop here for a while. Rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet. And since you’ve honored your servant with this visit, let me prepare some food to refresh you before you continue on your journey.”

“All right,” they said. “Do as you have said.” So Abraham ran back to the tent and said to Sarah, “Hurry! Get three large measures of your best flour, knead it into dough, and bake some bread.” Then Abraham ran out to the herd and chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly prepared it. When the food was ready, Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the men. As they ate, Abraham waited on them in the shade of the trees.

John 1: 14 (NLT)

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

5.               Jericho - Jerusalem

Luke 2: 49 (NLT)

“Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

Matthew 21: 23 (NLT)

when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it.

6.               Capernaum

Mark 2: 5 (NLT)

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”

Acts 2: 1 - 4 (NLT)

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.  Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

7.               Southern Steps

1 Corinthians 6: 19 (NLT)

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.

Fathers, Arise!

MEN,  you are at war!

2 Corinthians 10: 3 – 6 (NLT)

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. 4We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.  We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

   Critical Theory & Cultural Marxism

Romans 1: 26 & 27 (NLT)

God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. 27 And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Isaiah 5: 20 (ESV)

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

The Moment

AIDS, though a loose cannon, is a cannon indeed. As cynical as it may seem, AIDS, gives us a chance, however brief,

to establish us as a VICTIMIZED MINORITY legitimately deserving of America’s special protection and care.  Playing on our compassion…

This, therefore, is the question

and the challenge:

How can we surmount our “insurmountable” opportunity?

How can we maximize sympathy

and minimize the fear?  Emotions

How, given the horrid hand that AIDS has dealt us, can we best play it?

The campaign we outline, though complex, depends centrally upon a program of unabashed PROPAGANDA,

firmly grounded in long established principles of PSYCHOLOGY and MARKETING.

Propaganda:

1)              Relies on EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION

2)              Uses LIES

3)              Subjective  &  One-Sided

Strategy:

1)              Desensitizing

2)              Jamming

3)              Conversion

Deuteronomy 11: 1, 2, 18 – 21 (NLT)

“You must love the Lord your God and always obey his requirements, decrees, regulations, and commands. Keep in mind that I am not talking now to your children, who have never experienced the discipline of the Lord your God or seen his greatness and his strong hand and powerful arm. 18 “So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 19 Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road,

when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.

Proverbs 22: 6 (ESV)

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Ephesians 6: 4 (NLT)

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Nehemiah 4: 14 (NLT)

“Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!”

Acts 17: 2 – 4 (NLT)

As was Paul’s custom, he went to the synagogue service, and for three Sabbaths in a row he used the Scriptures to reason with the people. He explained the prophecies and proved that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead.  He said, “This Jesus I’m telling you about is the Messiah.” Some of the Jews who listened were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with many God-fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women.

1 Corinthians 15: 20 (NLT)

… in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died.

Matthew 27: 50 - 53 (NLT)

Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart, 52 and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead.  53 They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people.

Romans 6: 1 – 4 (NLT)

…should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?  4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism.  And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

Acts 1: 1 – 11 (NLT)

So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere - in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”   9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. 10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

Matthew 28: (NLT)

Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.   17 When they saw him, they worshiped him — but some of them doubted! 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Mark 4: 35 – 40 (NLT)

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”

36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).

37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. 38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!”

Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.  40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!

Another account when the disciples were on the Sea of Galilee…

Matthew 14: 32 & 33 (NLT)

For God is so wise and so mighty. Who has ever challenged him successfully? 8He alone has spread out the heavens and marches on the waves of the sea.

10He does great things too marvelous to understand. He performs countless miracles.

Who walks on Water?

Psalm 107: 26 - (NLT)

Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.   27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.

28 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
29 He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.

30 What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!  31 Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.   32 Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.

Mark 1: 21 & 22 (NLT)

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority —quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

23 Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”

25 But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet!  Come out of the man,” he ordered.

26 At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him.  27 Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”

    Matthew 12: 22 – 29 (NLT)

Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see.

23 The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”

24 But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”

25 Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed.  A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.  26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive.   27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said. 28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.  29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger —someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.

Mark 5: 1 – (NLT)

So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes.  When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained,

even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.  5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.

When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him.

With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!”

For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”

9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”

And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.”  10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. 11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.”  13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of about 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water. 14 The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. 15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and they were all afraid.  16 Then those who had seen what happened told the others about the demon-possessed man and the pigs.  17 And the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone.  18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.”  20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.

Matthew 4: 12 - 17(NLT)

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he left Judea and returned to Galilee. 13 He went first to Nazareth, then left there and moved to Capernaum, beside the Sea of Galilee, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This fulfilled what God said through the prophet Isaiah: “In the land of Zebulun and of Naphtali, beside the sea, beyond the Jordan River, in Galilee where so many Gentiles live, 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” 17 From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach.  22 The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority —quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

Jesus not only taught with authority, but, I believe, He validated the authority of scripture.

As a rabbi, He taught His disciples the teachings and the ways of God…

Matthew 11: 28 (NLT)

…Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Exodus 33: 14 (NLT)

The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest — everything will be fine for you.”

9.     Sea of Galilee

The Jews of Capernaum during Jesus’ life were well versed in the scriptures and knew they were chosen by God to be His witnesses…

Exodus 19: 5 & 6 (NLT)

Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’…

Numbers 15: 37 - 41 (NLT)

Then the Lord said to Moses,  38 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel:

Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord. 39 When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. 40 The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God. 41 I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt that I might be your God. I am the Lord your God!”

Leviticus 19: 1 & 2 (NLT)

The Lord also said to Moses, “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.

Israel vacillated between being too intertwined with the world and be too separated from the world…

2 Corinthians 6: 14 - (NLT)

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols?

For we are the temple of the living God.

As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God,and they will be my people.  17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.  18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Mark 4: 35 – 40 (NLT)

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”  36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed).

Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid?    Do you still have no faith?”  41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”

Jonah was asleep in a boat…
